  10.      This was the Cartesian technique of separation that 
  11. ensured that all the neglected aspects of experience would be 
  12. rolled back into the unconscious. This strategy, which grew 
  13. from lineal specialism and separation of functions, created the 
  14. world of dullness, bathos, and mock-profundity that Swift and 
  15. Pope and Sterne made fun of. Newton was quite eligible as hero 
  16. for The Dunciad  and certainly got a place in Gulliver‚Äôs Travels .
